Our Education

We provide accurate, up-to-date information to our community and clinical based education to healthcare providers.

Education For Our Community

For those in our community who are not healthcare providers, understanding a complex medical condition such as amniotic fluid embolism can be especially challenging. Throughout this site, you will find information to help you better understand AFE and the impacts it has on those it affects.

Download our Frequently Asked Questions for answers to the most common questions that include:

  • What is an amniotic fluid embolism and how is it treated?
  • What causes an amniotic fluid embolism?
  • What are the signs and symptoms of an amniotic fluid embolism?
  • What are the risk factors for an amniotic fluid embolism?
  • How is an amniotic fluid embolism diagnosed?

Education For Healthcare Providers

We are proud to work alongside the medical community to enhance clinicians’ knowledge of how to best treat and support the AFE patient, their families, and one another during and after an AFE event. The educational content we provide is focused on increasing critical care readiness, AFE pathophysiology, etiology, treatment, management, diagnosis, and recent trends in AFE research. All of our clincian education can be found on our NEW CLINCIAN DEDICATED WEBSITE.

Educational Spotlight

In 2018, the Connecticut Department of Health passed a landmark bill to mandate education of AFE to all Connecticut labor and delivery clinicians with education created in collaboration with the AFE Foundation. The collaboration brought AFE patients and families, clinicians, and governmental agencies together to promote AFE education.

We are grateful to the Connecticut Department of Health, the bill author and AFE survivor, Pattie Shea, legislative bill sponsors Representatives Mitch Bolinsky and Pam Staneski, and the families that shared their powerful stories during the legislative testimony for their efforts in seeing this Bill signed into law.
