Runnin’ for Rocco

When: Saturday, October 12, 2013 @ 7:00 AM
Where: Baltimore, Maryland 21230

In November 2008, a beautiful baby boy, Rocco, was brought into the world. Tragically, his mother, Teresa, passed away from complications of an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) during his delivery. What was supposed to be a day of great joy soon turned to one of heartbreak.

Wanting to do something to honor Teresa, an avid runner, her husband, family and friends created Runnin’ 4 Rocco, a team of runners and walkers to participate in the Baltimore Running Festival. The goal was to raise awareness of the condition that took her life and raise the critical funds needed for research.

October 2009 marked the first Runnin’ 4 Rocco event. More than 100 runners and walkers honored Teresa and remembered her kind spirit. Adorable Rocco who was one month shy of his 1st birthday buoyed everyone’s spirits. The team raised $7500.00 to benefit the AFE Foundation.

The second year proved to be even better than the first. Team Rocco was the largest team with over 200 participants. Team members included 2 other families who had also lost loved one’s to AFE as well as 3 AFE survivors. It proved to be the largest gathering of families touched by AFE in history. An additional $7500.00 was raised to benefit the AFE Foundation.

2011 marked the 3rd annual Runnin’ 4 Rocco. With 225 participants, team Rocco proved to be a force to be reckoned with! This year 8 other families touched by AFE joined the event and had the opportunity to have a private dinner with one another before the event. Despite the economic downturn, participants raised almost $10,000 to benefit the AFE Foundation’s mission and vision.

2012 marked our 4th year. Although we had a smaller team size, we continued to bring together AFE families from all over the country and Canada. 10 women were honored and remembered at a pre-race dinner.  We also hosted a pre-race happy hour where we raffled prizes and listened to some great acoustic music. The team was fired and up and ready to hit the course on Saturday. Again, team Rocco dominated the course with our incredible black shirts and bright teal logo. Over $8,000 was raised bringing team Rocco to an incredible total of $33,000 raised to date!

Teresa’s story has now reached thousands through these efforts and will continue for years to come. Planning is underway for the 5th annual Runnin’ 4 Rocco which is set for October 12, 2013 in Baltimore, MD. The AFE Foundation is once again an official charity for the Baltimore Running Festival and hopes to increase our reach by having 200 participants and raising$ 10,000.
